Carpet Tricks

Is it a Half-Caballerial or a 180 Ollie? In lieu of the fact that it's winter outside and in many unfortunate cases annoyingly snowy and wet, here's but one of a few (admittedly lame) tricks you can do right in your mom's den, especially if you have a really crummy board and are completely distended from eating too much pie over the holidays. [Ahem] But seriously.

The Half Cab (or the 180 Ollie)

The half cab and the 180 ollie are really the same trick performed while rolling in opposite directions, but as the distinction is made via the vector we are unable to make the discernment as performed from an idle position on the carpet.

The half cab is performed fakie. It derived it's name from Steve Caballero who originated it on the vert ramp whereby the rider rides up the wall fakie pops a 360 ollie and rides back down in a forward direction. Half of a 360 is a 180, therefore half a Caballerial is a Half Caballerial or a Half Cab for short. This is then a trick whereby the rider would ride up fakie pop it 180 and roll away fakie again. This trick can also be performed on the street or as in our case, on the carpet.

The half cab can be performed frontside or backside. Our carpet video (see right) catches it frontside. This is established by the movement of the rear foot, which is originally placed on the tail. If in the course of a trick the back foot moves forward the trick is said to be done frontside. If it moves back, behind the rider, the trick is said to be done backside.

How To Do The Half-Cab

Frontside/Goofy: Place your feet in ollie position. Then wind your upper torso in a counter-clockwise position. Next, pop the tail and unwind your body as you execute an ollie. The result will be a 180 turn in the clockwise (frontside) direction.
